Helpful water hints for Camping and Bushwalking

Dried Beef Mince

At some stage we have had food poisoning or know of someone who has. Needless to say food poisoning can really spoil your fun when camping or bushwalking. Toilets and medical facilities are usually distant and inconvenient, so minimising or preventing food poisoning is by far your best strategy.

Clean water is essential for happy camping and for re-hydrating Settlers Food Dried Mince. If you are unsure of your source of water we suggest the following:

  1. Boil Water vigorously for at least one minute, preferably two. Boiling water is an efficient way of disinfecting water, but it won't kill toxins and bugs.
  2. To get to these nasties try-
    1. Hydrogen peroxide. Add up to 10 drops to a litre of water.
    2. Chlorine and iodine water disinfection tablets from pharmacies, camping and sports stores. Follow the direction on the packs.
    3. Tincture of iodine (household iodine from first aid kits) can be used by adding 5 drops of Tincture of Iodine to 1 litre of clear water. If thewater is cloudy, add 10 drops and allow to stand for half an hour before consuming. If you know that the water has toxins, or are unsure, allow the water to sit over night.
    4. Portable water filters are now available which are compact and light-weight. Check with camping stores or water filtration companies.
